The Coca-Cola Company will unveil a new flavor with cane sugar, a week after President Donald Trump said he urged the company to make a change from high-fructose corn syrup, the beverage giant said Tuesday.
“As part of its ongoing innovation agenda, this fall in the United States, the company plans to launch an offering made with U.S. cane sugar to expand its Trademark Coca‑Cola product range,” the statement from the company read. “This addition is designed to complement the company’s strong core portfolio and offer more choices across occasions and preferences.”
Coca-Cola’s statement made no mention of President Trump, who claimed in a Truth Social post last week that the company agreed to start using real cane sugar in Coca-Cola cans and bottles produced in the United States.
“I have been speaking to @CocaCola about using REAL Cane Sugar in Coke in the United States, and they have agreed to do so,” announced Trump in a Truth Social post. “I’d like to thank all of those in authority at Coca-Cola. This will be a very good move by them — You’ll see. It’s just better!”
The White House shared Trump’s statement, along with an image that read, “Share a Coke with Trump.”
While the Coca-Cola Company did not explicitly confirm the news at the time, a spokesperson for the company said, “We appreciate President Trump’s enthusiasm for our iconic Coca-Cola brand. More details on new innovative offerings within our Coca-Cola product range will be shared soon.”
Coca-Cola used real sugar in the U.S. until it was replaced with high-fructose corn syrup in the 1980s. The previous recipe – which is still used in other regions of the world, including Europe and Australia – is currently imported into the United States from Mexico.
President Trump reportedly consumes as many as 12 cans of Diet Coke a day and currently has a button on his White House Oval Office desk which, when pressed, summons a servant with a Diet Coke on a silver platter.
