‘Do You Have Any Evidence?’ Newsmax Host Grills Pro-Trump Congressman on Biden Impeachment — Questions Fairness

Newsmax host Greta Van Susteren grilled pro-Trump Congressman Byron Donalds (R-FL) over the impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, questioning the “fair play” and the evidence — or lack thereof.

Republicans formalized their impeachment inquiry last month in a 221 to 212 vote — despite widespread acknowledgment by journalists (including Dan Abrams) and even other Republicans that there is “no evidence” of wrongdoing by President Biden.

On Thursday’s edition of Newsmax TV’s The Record With Greta Van Susteren, the veteran journalist questioned Rep. Donalds about the fairness of the probe, and when she asked about evidence against the president, Donalds claimed “that’s where our investigation is going to lead us”:

GRETA VAN SUSTEREN: I realize that the impeachment inquiry is going forward. But why now? The Republicans have been sitting on this for two years. It’s in an election year. Let the voters decide. Don’t you run the risk of everyone wondering, you know. You know what? Why now? Well, let the voters decide?

REP. BYRON DONALDS: Well, Greta, what’s going to be happening is we’ve been doing our investigative work really for all of 2023. That’s how deep and how cumbersome it was to untangle all of the Biden, uh, corruption, uh, scheme that was going on for the past 7 to 10 years. It took a year to go through all the documents.

The White House was still stonewalling us every step of the way. The Treasury Department and other agencies weren’t cooperating with us in any of this. So it took time to get to the place that we are right now.

It wasn’t that we were sitting on it. It’s that unfortunately, in modern politics, you have a media that does not play fair. They don’t want to just call balls and strikes and stay on the sidelines. They like to either persecute or cover up. And when it comes to the Bidens, they want to cover up. So House Republicans have to make a clear argument as to why we’re moving forward. It took time to actually bring all the evidence forward to do that.

GRETA VAN SUSTEREN: All right. In light, a lot of that. When will you issue report or do something? Because if you wait until October, the so-called October supplies right before November is like, you know, that, you know, in terms of fair play, that the other side, in this case, Biden’s would have no opportunity to respond or to act.

I mean, if you’re going to do this, you really need to do it a lot swifter just for a sense of fair play. You know, it may be everything you say, but fundamentally, to be fair, we would, you know, we’d like to hear what the Biden family has to say in response.

REP. BYRON DONALDS: Well, a couple of things. First of all, Greta, the Biden families had an opportunity to comment at any step along the way. All they’ve done is lie to the American people, led by Joe Biden and everybody else.

Number two, we were prepared to act, to to depose Hunter Biden a couple of weeks ago, he decided to do a stunt for his documentary, I guess, as opposed to honoring a congressional subpoena, something I would add, every American citizen has a responsibility and an obligation to adhere to.

You don’t get special treatment because you’re the president’s son. That’s, those are the facts. So we’re going to do our job. I’m not going to speed it up or slow it down. We’re not Jack Smith over here. We’re not playing politics. We are going through the process of investigating this family, and we’re going to continue to do that work.

GRETA VAN SUSTEREN: It seems pretty clear to me that that is a son who’s got, has had a lot of problems, he’s got a lot of weird businesses, dealings, is dealing with a lot of countries that are not our friends. He’s got a lot of cash coming in. He does, he is alleged not to pay his taxes. We’ve. I’ve seen pictures of him holding a gun, uh, half naked. I meam we have seen all that.

I mean, he is not exactly your model citizen, but do you have any evidence tying that non-model citizen to bad conduct on the part of the United States?

REP. BYRON DONALDS: Well, and that’s where our investigation is going to lead us.

We already have evidence of the president of the United States taking money through his son and through his brother. That’s bribery in and of itself.

The payments Donalds described turned out to have been documented loan repayments.
