Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D) admitted to having a “personal relationship” with Nathan Wade, one of the lawyers she hired to assist in the investigation into former President Donald Trump’s post-2020 election behavior in a filing on Friday.
Willis had been accused of having a sexual relationship with Wade by Michael Roman, one of the co-conspirators indicted alongside Trump last year, and was scheduled to address the issue in court later this month.
But Willis preempted that with a 176-page filing in which she argued that “any personal relationship among members of the prosecution team does not amount to a disqualifying conflict of interest or otherwise harm a criminal defendant.”
CBS News obtained an affidavit by Wade submitted Friday with Willis’s filing, CBS reported it added, “In 2022, District Attorney Willis and I developed a personal relationship in addition to our professional association and friendship. I have no financial interest in the outcome of the 2020 election interference case or in the conviction of any defendant. No funds paid to me in compensation for my role as Special Prosecutor have been shared with or provided to District Attorney Willis.”
Wade has been paid over $650,000 for his work on the case despite being, as CNN legal analyst Elie Honig put it “conspicuously unqualified” for the assignment, and it has been alleged that they have been on numerous trips with each other, raising questions over whether funds directed to Wade by Willis’s office have been spent on her.
Prior to admitting to the relationship, Willis had also contended that the allegations about her and Wade were racially motivated
“Isn’t it them who’s playing the race card when they only question one? Isn’t it them playing the race card when they constantly think I need someone from some other jurisdiction in some other state to tell me how to do a job I’ve been doing almost 30 years?” asked Willis rhetorically during a speech at a church earlier this month.
“Why don’t they look at themselves and just be honest? I mean, can’t they keep it a hundred with themselves? Come on, come on. Why are they so surprised that a diverse team that I assembled, your child, can accomplish extraordinary things?” continued Willis before calling Wade a “lawyer of impeccable credentials.”
Trump reacted to the news on Truth Social Friday:
Fani Willis, the D.A. of Fulton County, just admitted to having a sexual relationship with the Prosecutor she, in consultation with the White House and DOJ, appointed to “GET PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP.” By going after the most high level person, and the Republican Nominee, she was able to get her “lover” much more money, almost a Million Dollars, than she would be able to get for the prosecution of any other person or individual. THAT MEANS THAT THIS SCAM IS TOTALLY DISCREDITED & OVER!
Honig has also excoriated Willis for her reaction to the accusations, declaring that she’s “no victim.”
“If the district attorney wields the power of her office to do favors for her friends, to enrich herself, and to undermine the constitutional rights of her charged defendants, then she has earned the consequences,” he submitted.
