Fox News Host Grills George Santos About Trump Setting Him Free: ‘Why Shouldn’t You Have Served Out Your Full’ Prison Term?
Disgraced ex-congressman George Santos (R-NY) appeared on Fox & Friends Weekend Sunday fresh out of prison to explain why he deserved the commutation of his sentence granted by President Donald Trump.
Santos was originally sentenced to just over seven years in federal prison in April, but is now out after serving fewer than three months.
Trump posted to Truth Social on Friday night, saying, “George Santos was somewhat of a ‘rogue,’ but there are many rogues throughout our Country that aren’t forced to serve seven years in prison…George has been in solitary confinement for long stretches of time and, by all accounts, has been horribly mistreated. Therefore, I just signed a Commutation, releasing George Santos from prison, IMMEDIATELY. Good luck George, have a great life!”
Fox co-host Charlie Hurt asked Santos on Sunday, “So, You were convicted of identity theft and wire fraud, basically misusing donor funds for personal reasons. Why shouldn’t you have served out your full term?”
“I understand people want to make this into a ‘He’s getting away with it,'” Santos began. “I’m not getting away with it. I was the first person to ever federal prison for the civil FEC violation. These are usually solved and penalties, and I don’t want to focus on trying to rehash the past. I want to take the experience and do good and move on with the future.”
Santos continued, “Repentance is an understatement. It’s like, I have been dealt a second chance. I have a lot to prove to a lot of people and after make sure President Trump understands that I’m not going to disappoint him.”
Santos said he had no immediate plans to run for Congress, but he’s not “ruling it out.” He added that he planned to work on prison reform and to help the people who are being “absolutely drowned with this arbitrary sentencing style of judges who were trying to circumvent the First Step Act,” signed by Trump in 2018 to reduce recidivism.
