Fox’s Howard Kurtz Opens Show By Covering Trump’s Lawsuit Against Rupert Murdoch, Wall Street Journal
Fox News host Howard Kurtz opened his show Sunday with coverage of the lawsuit filed by President Donald Trump against Rupert Murdoch — who owns Fox News.
At the outset of Sunday’s MediaBuzz, Kurtz laid out “the facts as we know them” in connection with Trump’s newly-filed claim against the Journal and its owner over its story on Thursday reporting that the president sent a tawdry letter to Epstein for his 50th birthday. Kurtz noted the potential drawbacks for Trump of bringing a case against the Journal.
“By accusing the newspaper of libel in a filing in Miami, the president has drawn extra attention to the Journal’s reporting,” Kurtz said.
Kurtz went on to name all of the parties in the lawsuit — including Murdoch.
“Also named in the Trump suit are Dow Jones, News Corp — the sister company of Fox News Media — and Rupert Murdoch, who founded Fox News and bought the Journal 18 years ago,” Kurtz said.
The Fox News host made clear that the network has not corroborated the Journal’s reporting.
“Fox News has not independently confirmed the accuracy of the Wall Street Journal’s reporting about the letter,” Kurtz said.
Kurtz’s mention of the lawsuit at the top of Sunday’s show was particularly notable given how little coverage the Journal’s report — and Trump’s lawsuit — have received on Fox News. According to a search of the media monitoring service Snapstream, only two shows have mentioned the Journal report since it was published late Thursday — Bret Baier’s Special Report on Friday, and the Journal Editorial Report on Saturday.
But the Fox News host believes the Epstein story isn’t going away.
“Meanwhile, President Trump has ordered Attorney General Pam Bondi to release the grand jury testimony in the Epstein case, which continues to dominate the news,” Kurtz said. “That will be up to a judge who must take into account such factors as the privacy of witnesses and victims. By ordering those disclosures, the president basically ensures this story will keep grabbing the headlines for some time to come.”
