Democratic strategist James Carville knocked members of his own party for breaking his “first commandment of politics” with their various protests of President Donald Trump’s address to Congress last week.
“My first commandment of politics is, ‘Thine shall not make an ass of thyself.’ And they didn’t follow the Carville first commandment,” Carville told Fox News Digital.
Democratic lawmakers took part in various forms of protest during Trump’s address to Congress. Some held signs protesting the president’s policies, some walked out of the chamber, and Rep. Al Green (D-TX) was removed after yelling at the president multiple times, accusing him of wanting to cut Medicaid.
Green was later censured for his actions and condemned by colleagues on both sides of the aisle.
Carville blasted Democrats for “not meeting the moment” and mocked lawmakers’ “auction paddles” and Green “beating a stick on the floor,” referring to the lawmaker’s cane he was pictured with while heckling the president.
He also knocked a recent TikTok video of Democratic lawmakers taking video game-like “choose your fighter” stances. According to Carville, his party is currently lacking a leader.
“I think that the Democrats have to meet the moment. And dance in videos. Auction paddles of cane-banging does not meet the moment,” the adviser to former President Bill Clinton said.
Carville, who recently called Trump the biggest “crisis” this country has faced in its history, argued Democrats need to “act like it’s a very grave situation.” The strategist did offer praise to Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) for giving the official Democratic response to Trump. Carville called her “measured, reasonable, articulate,” exactly what he said her colleagues should have been.
“I think we’re at a very perilous moment in the country. I really do. I think it might go the wrong way. And what I think Democrats should do is act like it’s a very grave situation. And, I know that they get donors that call them and demand something. And somebody, [a] late-night person said, you know, why don’t they just pass something? Well, we can’t pass gas,” the strategist said.
