Kristen Welker Confronts Ron DeSantis on Trump’s ‘Legal Troubles’: Is That ‘The Reason You’re Still in This Race?’
Amid dismal poll numbers, NBC’s Kristen Welker confronted Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) about whether former President Donald Trump’s “legal troubles” are the reason he’s still in the presidential race.
In an interview Sunday on Meet the Press, the NBC News host put DeSantis on the spot.
“As you know, you are trailing double digits behind former President Trump,” Welker said. “He is facing 91 felony counts. Do you believe that the former president’s legal troubles are the reason that you’re still in this race?”
From there, DeSantis actually went to bat for Trump — at least to some degree — by attacking the case against Trump brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. In fact, the Florida governor went so far as to blame Bragg for the current state of the Republican race.
“I think that had Alvin Bragg not politicized this back in April,” DeSantis said. I think that probably the primary be looking different. I think that gave the former president more support.”
Desantis argued that Republican voters become more sympathetic to Trump after Bragg filed his case — charging the former president with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records relating to the hush money payout of Stormy Daniels.
“I think people felt that he was treating being treated unfairly, which he was,” DeSantis said. “And that circumstance, I think has been a very important inflection point in this, because it highlights the weaponization of justice by some of these Left-wing prosecutors.”
While he trashed the Bragg prosecution, DeSantis did not comment on the merits of the other cases pending against Trump.
