Macron Explains Shocking Viral Video of His Wife Slapping Him in the Face
French President Emmanuel Macron dismissed viral footage of his wife appearing to shove him on the steps of their plane in Vietnam, blaming Russian disinformation networks for distorting what he said was a moment of private joke into a global media storm.
“My wife and I were squabbling, we were rather joking, and I was taken by surprise,” Macron told Agence France-Presse reporters, adding that the moment had “become a kind of planetary catastrophe.”
The French president landed in Vietnam on Sunday for what the Élysée had hoped would be a diplomatic tour to promote France’s Indo-Pacific partnerships. Instead, the viral video of Macron and wife Brigette Macron seized headlines which, he claimed, originate from “networks that are quite well-traceable” to “the Russians” and “extremists in France.”
The president reportedly appeared exasperated as he attempted to put down claims that the interaction was part of an argument.
“None of these are true,” he said. “Everyone needs to calm down.”
Initially, the Élysée questioned whether the video had been manipulated with artificial intelligence. But the footage, captured by the Associated Press, was later confirmed as genuine.
Macron, however, insisted the interpretations were misleading: “In these three videos I took a tissue, shook someone’s hand and just joked with my wife… Nothing more.”
Russia’s foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova mocked the episode, sarcastically referring to it as “a right hook from his wife” and suggesting: “Maybe it was the ‘hand of the Kremlin’?”
