A majority of Americans believe President Donald Trump is a “dangerous dictator” and someone “whose power should be limited” before he “destroys American democracy,” according to a shocking new poll.

The new survey from the nonpartisan Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI), first reported by Axios, finds that 52% agree with the statement just 100-days into his second term.

The poll also, unsurprisingly, shows that 87% of Democrats agree but also that among independents, 56% view Trump in dictatorial terms. Only 17% of Republicans agreed.

It’s a damning assessment of Trump’s efforts to reshape the federal government, from mass firings of federal employees to dismantling equity programs and escalating deportation tactics — actions that have prompted alarm over authoritarian overreach.

Trump’s approval remains sharply polarized: 83% of Republicans still view him favorably, compared to just 35% of independents and 8% of Democrats.

In a Monday Truth Social post Trump dismissed sinking 100-day poll approval numbers as “fake” and demanded media-backed polls be “investigated for election fraud.”

But PRRI’s findings show a nation deeply skeptical of Trump’s governance. Nearly three-quarters of Americans oppose shuttering major federal agencies, and two-thirds reject his sweeping tariffs. Most oppose mass deportations and military-guarded internment camps for undocumented immigrants.
