Mike Pence Rebukes Trump for Speculating Ukraine ‘May Be Russian Someday’
Former Vice President Mike Pence rebuked his old boss, President Donald Trump, for speculating that Ukraine “may be Russian someday” during his most recent interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier, arguing on Monday that such a thing would only come to pass if the United States “abandons” the Ukrainians.
“They [the Ukrainians] may make a deal, they may not make a deal. They may be Russian someday, or they may not be Russian someday,” Trump told Baier in a portion of the interview that aired on Monday.
Alongside a screenshot of a headline describing Trump’s comments, Pence offered his take.
“Mr. President, Ukraine will only ‘be Russian someday’ if the United States abandons them to Putin’s brutal invasion,” wrote Pence on X. “As you just said, ‘When America is Strong the World is at Peace.’ Stand Firm. If Ukraine falls, it will only be a matter of time until Russia invades a NATO ally our troops will be required to defend.”
While Pence was known to be one of Trump’s most loyal lieutenants during his first term in the White House, the two had a falling out over Pence’s refusal to participate in Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Since then, Trump has repeatedly attacked Pence in personal terms while Pence has offered critiques of Trump on policy.
The former vice president declined to endorse Trump’s successful bid to retake the White House in 2024, and has worked to sink Trump’s nominee to run the Department of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., over his advocacy for pro-choice policies.
“For the majority of his career, RFK Jr. has defended abortion on demand during all nine months of pregnancy, supports overturning the Dobbs decision and has called for legislation to codify Roe v Wade. If confirmed, RFK, Jr. would be the most pro-abortion Republican appointed secretary of HHS in modern history,” declared Pence in November. “On behalf of tens of millions of pro-life Americans, I respectfully urge Senate Republicans to reject this nomination and give the American people a leader who will respect the sanctity of life as secretary of Health and Human Services.”
