A major new poll out Sunday shows President Donald Trump has taken a hit in his approval rating, and his party is falling well behind in the race to Congress.
According to a new poll out Sunday from NBC News, the president’s approval rating currently sits at 43 percent — compared to 55 percent who disapprove of his job performance. That approval number represents a 4 percent drop from his standing in March.
The dissatisfaction with Trump extends to the entire Republican party, the poll found. On the generic Congressional ballot, Democrats lead Republicans by a sizable 8-point margin — 50-42. That’s a 7-point bump for Democrats from NBC’s March survey, which showed them ahead by just a single point.
Astonishingly, the gains have come in spite of Americans still holding deeply unfavorable views about the Democratic party at large. A paltry 28 percent of voters currently hold a positive view of the party, while a whopping 53 percent have a negative view of Democrats. The gap is a bit narrower for Republicans — although they too are underwater. The GOP’s favorable-unfavorable split stands at 37-46 in the new NBC poll.
But the midterms figure to be a referendum on Trump, according to the poll. A whopping 70 percent of voters say they “want their vote to send a message about support for or opposition to the president,” which is the highest number in NBC polling over the past three decades. Forty percent say they want their midterm vote to signal opposition to Trump, while 30 percent intend to show their support for Trump at the ballot box in 2026.
