Texas State Senator Angela Paxton (R) announced on Thursday that she had filed for divorce from her husband, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R), who is also mounting a primary challenge against Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) — and now the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) is piling on.

“Today, after 38 years of marriage, I filed for divorce on biblical grounds. I believe marriage is a sacred covenant and I have earnestly pursued reconciliation. But in light of recent discoveries, I do not believe that it honors God or is loving to myself, my children, or Ken to remain in the marriage,” wrote Angela Paxton in a post on X. “I move forward with complete confidence that God is always working everything together for the good of those who love Him and who are called according to His purpose.”

“Biblical grounds” for divorce refers to either adultery or abandonment.

Hours after his wife issued her statement, the embattled attorney general released one of his own.

“After facing the pressures of countless political attacks and public scrutiny, Angela and I have decided to start a new chapter in our lives,” it read, painting the decision to separate as a mutual one. “I could not be any more proud or grateful for the incredible family that God has blessed us with, and I remain committed to supporting our amazing children and grandchildren. I ask for your prayers and privacy at this time.”

The NRSC, which is supporting Cornyn in his reelection bid, also issued weighed in on the matter.

“What Ken Paxton has put his family through is truly repulsive and disgusting,” declared the organization’s communications director, Joanna Rodriguez. “No one should have to endure what Angela Paxton has, and we pray for her as she chooses to stand up for herself and her family during this difficult time.”

Paxton has survived scandal before.. Back in 2023, he was impeached by the state’s House of Representatives over allegations of corruption, but was acquitted by the state senate. During the proceedings, Paxton’s ex-chief of staff alleged that he had an extramarital affair that he admitted to back in 2018.
