White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller has emerged as the favorite to serve as President Donald Trump’s next national security adviser, according to Axios’s Marc Caputo.

Caputo reported on Friday — one day after the White House announced that Mike Waltz, who originally was named to the position, was being nominated to serve as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations — that Miller has earned respect for running the Homeland Security Council “like clockwork.”

One official told Caputo that the HSC has been “infinitely more effective than the NSC” while two others suggested that the close working relationship between Miller and Secretary of State Marco Rubio — who is also presently serving as interim national security adviser — could help the former secure the role.

“Marco and Stephen have worked really closely on immigration and it might be a perfect match,” said one source.

“Given how well he’s worked with Marco, many see him as the perfect person to restore the role of the NSA to a staff-level policy role that reports to the chief of staff, instead of some inflated Cabinet position,” added another.

Miller has been one of the faces of the second Trump administration in its early days, frequently taking to the airwaves to extoll Trump’s actions and rail against his enemies.

“This president has literally saved America,” declared Miller at a press briefing on Thursday. “And I could not be prouder. I could not be prouder, as I know Karoline [Leavitt] feels the same way, to come every single day to this building where we have a leader sitting in office whose first, last, and every thought is the safety, prosperity, security, and sovereignty of the citizens.”
