Former colleagues of Karine Jean-Pierre tore about her new book about her time in former President Joe Biden’s administration, with some calling it a “grift” and others theorizing it is a direct result of a failed media opportunity.

Jean-Pierre, who served as White House press secretary for Biden, revealed on Wednesday that she has authored a book titled Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside the Party Lines that will be released in October. The former press secretary announced she is leaving the Democratic Party while she promises an inside look at the “broken” White House she worked in.

“Everyone thinks this is a grift,” a former official told Politico.

The official and others gave their comments anonymously. The first former official revealed that Jean-Pierre was copying a publicist on emails during the end of her time in her press secretary gig.

Others said she’d already discussed being an independent while working for Biden.

“She made a joke about being an independent last year and now it’s a book. All ideas are monetary — even the dumb ones,” another former official said.

Two other former colleagues claimed that Jean-Pierre had been hoping her appearances on The View would lead to an offer to co-host the roundtable show. That never came to fruition, which the colleagues believe motivated the book. Jen Psaki, another former press secretary under Biden, moved into an MSNBC hosting position after her time at the White House.

One Democratic operative who worked with Jean-Pierre before her time in the administration told Politico her book and sudden change in party feels like “the most grift-y thing I’ve seen in a long time, and that’s saying something in Washington.”

Jean-Pierre’s book announcement comes amid revelations out of Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson’s Original Sin, in which former Biden officials opened up about their concerns over the former president’s decline and the lengths they went to cover for the president.
