New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani is being called out over a video he shared on X in December —which a Jewish advocacy group denounced as “sick.”
Mamdani, on Dec. 27, posted a video titled “Hey Hanukkah” from a Punjabi-Candadian music duo called the Geeta Brothers — in which the duo and two other men are seen spinning dreidels and dancing to Punjabi-style music behind a menorah.
“Happy 3rd night of Hanukkah from Astoria and Long Island City,” Mamdani wrote.
The advocacy group StopAntisemitism unearthed the clip and condemned Mamdani for sharing it.
“Zohran Mamdani posts Indian men cosplaying Jews, spinning dreidels and lighting the menorah,” the group wrote, in a Saturday post on X. “Our holidays and traditions are sacred and not for your comedic pleasure @ZohranKMamdani – this is sick.”
Mamdani, the favorite to become New York City’s next mayor by virtue of his June 24 Democratic primary win, has come under criticism over his refusal to condemn the phrase “globalize the intifada.” Fellow New York Democrats Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries are among those who have called on him to denounce the slogan.
“Globalizing the intifada, by way of example, is not an acceptable phrasing,” Jeffries told ABC on June 29. “He’s going to have to clarify his position on that as he moves forward.”
