Trump Administration to Pay Migrants $1,000 Each to Self-Deport: ‘This Is the Safest Option’
The Trump administration is pushing for illegal immigrants to voluntarily leave the U.S. — and it’s prepared to sweeten the deal with cash.
The Department of Homeland Security will be paying self-deporting migrants $1,000 each if they volunteer to leave via the CBP Home app by submitting an “Intent to Depart” form, according to a statement from the agency.
In addition to the stipend, the federal government will also cover the cost of their one-way flight home.
“If you are here illegally, self-deportation is the best, safest and most cost-effective way to leave the United States to avoid arrest,” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement. “DHS is now offering illegal aliens financial travel assistance and a stipend to return to their home country through the CBP Home App.”
Noem also claimed the initiative will ultimately save American taxpayers’ money.
“This is the safest option for our law enforcement, aliens and is a 70% savings for US taxpayers,” Noem said in the statement.
Migrants who take part in the program will no longer be targeted for removal, and open the option for a legal return to the U.S., the DHS said.
Thousands have already volunteered to self-deport under the program, DHS assistant secretary of public affairs, Tricia McLaughlin, told Fox News.
“We’re giving our word that we will give you this money and that you can leave today,” McLaughlin said when asked by America’s Newsroom anchor Bill Hemmer on why a migrant should trust the government will actually pay.
