Trump Chuckles After Viktor Orbán Declares It Would Take a ‘Miracle’ for Ukraine to Beat Russia
Hungarian President Viktor Orbán got a chuckle out of President Donald Trump on Friday when he declared it would take a “miracle” for Ukraine to win the war against Russia.
While speaking with Orbán at the White House, Trump was asked about “meetings” with Russian President Vladimir Putin to bring an end to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The president said he has confidence the war will come to an end, and Orbán added he is “strongly convinced” that will happen.
The Hungarian president also accused other European nations of wanting the war to continue because they believe Ukraine can defeat Russia. That belief, he declared, is a “misunderstanding of the situation.”
Orbán argued:
I’m strongly convinced, so the question is whether we Westerners are unified or not. The problem is that the president has huge peace efforts, which are just splendid and very positive for the European continent and for the peoples of Europe. But at the same time we are not unified because Brussels and the Europeans have a different approach to the war. So the only the pro-peace government is the United States government and the small Hungary in Europe anyway. All the other governments prefer to continue the war because many of them think that Ukraine can win on the front line, which is a misunderstanding of the situation, so it’s a complicated issue. We will discuss it. It requires not just two minutes to respond to your question, but rather than our lecture, sorry, not to continue more.
Before moving on with more questions, Trump asked Orbán whether Ukraine can win the war.
“So you would say that Ukraine cannot win that war?” the president asked.
“You know, a miracle can happen,” Orbán said, throwing his hands up.
“Yeah,” Trump said, chuckling at the blunt response. “That’s right.”
