White House on Lockdown After Car Smashes Into Gate, Driver Arrested

A man was arrested late Tuesday night after crashing his vehicle into a security barrier outside the White House, prompting a swift lockdown and bomb squad response.

The U.S. Secret Service confirmed that “at approximately 10.37 p.m., an individual drove a vehicle into the Secret Service vehicle gate located at 17th & E St, NW, in Washington, DC.”

“The individual was arrested and the vehicle was assessed and deemed safe,” the agency added.

Photos from the scene show a bomb detection robot inspecting the dark sedan after the crash. The area near the corner of 17th and E Streets remained sealed off overnight as investigators examined the vehicle, which was later cleared by authorities.

President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time. Hours earlier, he hosted nearly every Republican senator for a “Rose Garden Club” lunch, as the government shutdown drags on into a fourth week with the GOP resisting Democratic demands for additional health care funding.

The Secret Service did not identify the suspect or provide a possible motive for the crash. No injuries were reported.

As of early Wednesday, the investigation into “the cause of this collision” remains ongoing, the Secret Service said.
