A whopping majority of Americans do not support the United States getting involved in the fighting between Israel and Iran, according to a new poll.

On top of Israel and Iran exchanging strikes, President Donald Trump has hinted the United States could get more directly involved. In an interview with ABC News over the weekend, the president admitted the United States military “could get involved” in the escalating conflict. He also claimed Iran is “very close” to possessing a nuclear weapon despite Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard testifying in March that the intelligence community does not believe Iran is currently building a nuclear weapon.

Trump’s words have caused somewhat of a split in MAGA world, with major voices like Tucker Carlson urging him to steer clear of getting involved in another war.

A new Economist/YouGov poll this week shows that Americans are not too excited about the US getting involved in Israel and Iran’s fighting.

According to the results, just 16% back US involvement while 60% say the US should not be involved. Another 24% said they were unsure.

The numbers remain relatively similar when broken down by party affiliation. Just 15% of Democrats believe the US should get involved, and 23% of Republicans agree. More than 60% of Democrats, however, and more than 50% of Republicans believe the US should not be involved.

Among Trump voters specifically, 19% believe the US should get involved in the growing conflict, while 53% believe we should stay out of it. Another 28% said they were unsure.

The survey also asked about specific negotiating tactics the US could take with Iran. The most support (28%) overall went to threatening Iran with harsher sanctions. Another 24% said sanctions already in place should be loosened, while 26% believe Iran should be incentivized with “resumption of diplomatic relations.” Another 18% back the US threatening Iran with military force.

The survey was conducted from June 13-16 based on more than 1,500 adults, nearly 1,400 of whom are registered to vote, through web-based interviews. It carries a margin of error of approximately 3.3.%.
