‘Why Would I?’ Dr. Oz Refuses to Reveal Trump’s Health Care Plan to Fox Anchor
Dr. Mehmet Oz, the administrator for Medicare and Medicaid Services, told Fox Business Network he was “over the moon” to hear that the Senate has agreed to reopen the government, but wouldn’t share the Trump administration’s next steps for the Affordable Care Act.
Sunday night, seven Democrats and one Independent senator joined with Republicans to vote in favor of ending the shutdown without securing an agreement to continue offering subsidies to the millions of Americans on the Affordable Care Act.
Oz told host Maria Bartiromo, “It’s the right thing for the American people. You should not be negotiating important issues, in this case, the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid under an extortionary situation where you’re holding the government hostage.”
Oz claimed that the average person on Obamacare “pays $50 a month for their insurance now, it used to be $37, means paying $13 dollars more next year than this year – that is the reason we shut government down six weeks, according to Democrats.”
Health policy research shows that “expiration of the enhanced premium tax credits is estimated to more than double what subsidized enrollees currently pay annually for premiums—a 114% increase from an average of $888 in 2025 to $1,904 in 2026.”
Bartiromo asked, “Do you have thoughts on how these ACA subsidies should move forward? The Committee for Responsible Budget says if you do a deal and fully extend those without any offsets, that would be a costliest way to end the shutdown ever. Because a 2-year extension costs $60 billion. The full counter proposal continuing resolution rolls back the Medicaid savings of 1 1/2 trillion — Republicans are never going for that. Do you have a thought on how you want to see this play out once these subsidies do expire this year?” she asked Dr. Oz.
“You always ask the right questions, Maria,” Oz said to Bartiromo. “I spent a good part of the weekend with the White House working on exactly the answer to that question. We have lots of great ideas, but I don’t want to show our cards. As the president often says, ‘Why would I telegraph what we are going to do?'”
