Charles Barkley Torches Grand Canyon University After March Madness Loss to Alabama: ‘Some of the Dumbest Basketball I’ve Ever Seen’
Charles Barkley was disgusted by the performance of Grand Canyon University’s men’s basketball team in its NCAA Tournament loss to Alabama.
The Antelopes fell to the Crimson Tide 72-61 in the second round of the tournament. Upon closer examination of the box score, it becomes clear why Grand Canyon entered the tournament as the 12th seed in the West bracket.
For starters, the team shot 18-56 from the field — a staggering 32.1%. The Antelopes also shot just 23-37 from the free throw line and had a total of five assists on the 38 points that didn’t come from the line. Grand Canyon was also 2-20 on 3-point attempts.
“Grand Canyon, that was the dumbest game of basketball I think I may have ever seen,” Barkley said during the post-game show on TBS. “Everybody went one-on-one. They missed how many free throws?
“I’m not sure what they were doing offensively. I don’t think they ran a play the entire second half… That was some of the dumbest basketball I’ve ever seen [from] grown, college men. [Alabama guard Mark Sears] was the only guy who played with complete composure the entire game. Congratulations to Alabama University. [Alabama coach] Nate Oats does a great job; but man, Grand Canyon.”
When Barkley was told Grand Canyon had five assists, he had a hard time believing the team even managed to get to that number.
“We got a crack staff if they found five passes!” Barkley joked.
