Fox’s Dana Perino Claims Caitlin Clark and Other Top WNBA Draft Picks Could Get ‘Dunked On by Transgenders’ Next Season
Fox News pundit Dana Perino offered an odd WNBA scenario in an effort to illustrate potential concerns about trans athletes being allowed to compete with women.
On Tuesday’s episode of The Five, the panel discussed South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley and her recent comments supporting the inclusion of trans women. Perino disagreed with Staley and conjured a hypothetical scenario in which this year’s top WNBA draft picks — like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese — have their play overshadowed by trans players.
“Imagine that all of a sudden, they go to the WNBA after the draft,” she said, adding, “And next year, they’re getting dunked on by transgenders. And you think there wouldn’t be an outrage? Especially on the salary point. The scholarship point we already know; and then what if one of them gets injured by one and their careers are over? That’s what happening to some of these collegiate girls. That one girl in North Carolina, she’ll never be the same.”
At this current point in time, there is no legitimate concern of that scenario coming to fruition. The exact number of trans athletes playing college sports is unknown, according to the Associated Press, but it’s believed to be small.
Additionally, as The Daily Beast reporter Justin Baragona pointed out online, there are no trans women in NCAA Division I women’s basketball. In the WNBA, there is one player who identifies as non-binary — Los Angeles Sparks guard Layshia Clarendon. Born a female, Clarendon did have top surgery for a more masculine chest.
