‘I Don’t Know if We Need That, Guys’: Yankees Broadcaster Doesn’t Care for Closeup of Player’s ‘Big Dumper’
Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay advised the YES Network crew against showing close-ups of Cal Raleigh’s behind during Tuesday’s game. The crew kept doing it anyway.
The Yankees hosted the Mariners on Tuesday night, which meant that Major League Baseball’s two leading home run hitters were in the same ballpark in the form of Raleigh (36) and Aaron Judge (34).
In the top of the sixth, Raleigh was on first base when Kay explained how the catcher got his nickname, “Big Dumper.”
“Now, his minor league teammates – I guess I agree with him – they gave him the nickname Big Dumper, because he has a pretty large posterior,” Kay said as color commentator Paul O’Neill chuckled. “And he did not like it. His former teammate Jarred Kelenic said [Raleigh] hated it. Hated it!”
As Kay spoke, one of the YES camera operators got a good look at the Big Dumper in question.
“We’re getting a close-up!” O’Neill cracked.
“I don’t know if we need that, guys,” Kay said. “Goodness!”
“We don’t miss a thing here, Michael,” O’Neill boasted.
“In Seattle, they sell number 29 jerseys with the name Big Dumper on the back,” Kay went on. “Now, you look at this guy. He’s a big guy, right, Paul? He has nine stolen bases.”
During this time, the camera kept panning on and off Raleigh’s behind.
“Paul, I truly hope that our brilliant director, Dan Barr, is done with that shot,” Kay said, all but begging for the director to focus on something else.
“You’ve had enough?” O’Neill asked.
“We’ve seen it,” Kay answered. “We know why the nickname is the nickname, and we’re good. We’re good.”
Raleigh homered in the game, but the Mariners lost 10-3.
