Juwan Howard Stunned by Question About ‘White Media’ Putting Him on the ‘Hot Seat’ at Michigan
Michigan basketball coach Juwan Howard was blindsided by a question about the “White media” questioning his future with the program.
The Wolverines lost to Penn State in the Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday, ending their season with a record of 8-24. During the post-game press conference, Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder reporter Charles Hallman asked Howard about his job security and claimed the “White media” put him and other Black coaches on the hot seat.
“There’s three Black coaches in this conference,” Hallman said, “and throughout the season, each one of you has been put on the hot seat by the White media. I’m hoping that you survive this, but we know sometimes Black coaches don’t. But can you speak on just the fact that the three of you are doing the job that you’ve been hired to do, representing as coaches with Black kids in the stands today. They got to see you, coach, and we’ll see the other two Black coaches in this tournament. Can you just speak on that?”
Howard simply said criticism was part of the job and all he can do is “roll up my sleeves and work hard every day.”
