LISTEN: ‘Mad Dog’ Russo Welches on His Pledge to ‘Retire On the Spot’ if Arizona Won the NLCS, Agrees to Wear a Bikini in Public Instead

After vowing to retire from broadcasting if the Arizona Diamondbacks won the NLCS, Chris “Mad Dog” Russo will instead wear a bikini.

Ahead of Monday’s Game 6 between the Diamondbacks and Philadelphia Phillies, Russo expressed having no confidence in Arizona. Trailing 3-2 to the Phillies, the Diamondbacks had to win back-to-back games in Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park — one of the most intense playoff atmospheres in the league.

In fact, he was so confident in the Phillies winning that he claimed he’d “retire on the spot” if they lost.

“I would not be stunned if they won tonight. I would be floored,” Russo said early Tuesday. “And I’ll say this right now… If they win the next two games and win this series in seven games, I will retire on the spot.”

When the Diamondbacks clinched a trip to the World Series late Tuesday night, many people online were quick to refer back to Russo’s comments. He appeared on The Howard Stern Show on Wednesday morning and negotiated an alternative.

“How about this: you come on my show — I’ll come into Manhattan for this — we put you in a bikini, and you walk down the street with a sign that says, ‘I’m a douche,'” Stern said. “If you do that, people will say, ‘OK, it’s alright. Mad Dog settled it.”

Surprisingly, Russo was open to the idea.

“That’s a little more reasonable,” Russo responded. “That is a little fair. I can live with that. That’s not the worst idea.”

Russo did have some pushback on the sign, but Stern insisted on it.

“You want me to go in that direction?” Russo asked. “That’s what you wanted me to do?”

Stern reiterated that it was important for Russo to be humiliated.

“I don’t want you to do anything,” Stern said, “but I know people are gonna call ‘bullshit’ on you for a long time unless you do something radical.”
