‘Should Be Ashamed of Themselves’: NFL Under Fire For Giving Player Light Suspension After Allegedly Assaulting the Mother of His Children

NFL fans called out the league for giving Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Cameron Sutton a relatively light suspension for his alleged assault of the mother of his children.
In March, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in Florida announced there was a warrant for Sutton’s arrest in connection with a domestic dispute. The sheriff’s office stated he was wanted for Domestic Battery by strangulation.
He turned himself in the night of March 31. Police had been searching for him since March 7 when officers responded to a report of an assault. Sutton reportedly fled the scene before police arrived, but police said the victim — the mother of Sutton’s children — “suffered wounds that indicated an incident took place.”
During the police’s search for him, the Lions released him. In June, he signed a one-year deal with the Steelers.
On Monday, the league announced that Sutton was suspended for eight games for violating the NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy.

To many, that suspension was nowhere near enough considering the allegations against him.
Both the NFL and the Steelers should be ashamed of themselves https://t.co/yhhjH82URS pic.twitter.com/3c79KC4P6H

This is weak. He should be suspended indefinitely and should never play a snap in the nfl again https://t.co/bsEOw36KcE

8 games. That’s it. That’s a joke https://t.co/7wyKKeus9h

The “March incident” Schefter is obfuscating was Sutton attacking a longtime partner (and parent of his three kids) by slamming her into a wall, biting her neck to the point that drew blood, and choking her until she was unconscious.
Schefter is such an insult to journalism. https://t.co/iLL2WeKLID— Marc Delucchi (@maddelucchi) July 8, 2024
“Incident”
He should be nowhere near an NFL organization. Disgusting. https://t.co/KOD04CYWbW pic.twitter.com/LEGKD59h1N

As multiple people noted, the penalty for assault is less than half the length of the suspension players receive for violating the league’s policy on gambling.
