Trump Lists Off Canadian Hockey Players During Meeting With Prime Minister — Mistakenly Includes Russia’s Alex Ovechkin

President Donald Trump on Tuesday included Russia’s Alex Ovechkin while listing off great Canadian hockey players next to Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Carney visited the Oval Office for a meeting with Trump on Tuesday. When that meeting was opened to press, Trump reaffirmed his mission to make Canada the 51st state of the U.S. — which Carney rejected to his face — and fielded a host of questions regarding trade deals and his sweeping tariffs.

At one point, Trump praised the U.S.’s northern neighbor and referenced a few things he likes about the country — including hockey.

“Canada’s a very special place to me,” Trump said. “I know so many people that live in Canada. My parents had relatives that lived in Canada — my mother in particular — and, no, I love Canada… I have a lot of respect for the Canadians. Wayne Gretzky, I mean how good — the ‘great one.’ You happen to have a very, very good hockey player right here on the Capitals who I have a lot of respect [for]. He is a big, tough cookie, too. He just broke the record; and he’s a great guy. You know, we had the team here and I got to know a lot of the players. But no, Canada is a very special place.”

The second player Trump was referring to was Ovechkin, who recently broke Gretzky’s all-time goals record in the NHL. He was born in Moscow.
