Watch the Stunning Overhead Footage of Jockey’s Daredevil Ride to Win Preakness

Jockey Umberto Rispoli won the biggest race of his career Saturday — and had to make an unbelievably daring move to do it.

In the homestretch of the 150th running of the Preakness Stakes — the middle jewel of horse racing’s Triple Crown — Rispoli, who was riding race-favorite Journalism, was squeezed in tightly along the rail. The stunning overhead footage shows the horse to Journalism’s outside, Goal Oriented, bumping him and impeding his path. Meanwhile, another horse — Clever Again — was directly in front of Journalism holding the inside position.

At that point, Rispoli was faced with a choice: Wait for space to open up along the rail, or try to squeeze through a very, very narrow opening between Goal Oriented and Clever again. He chose the latter.

“What bravery!” NBC Sports analyst Randy Moss said. “What bravery!”

Journalism got bumped badly by Goal Oriented as he tried to push through the opening. But he somehow recovered, and then exploded down the lane to reel in race-leader Gosger just before the wire.

Retired jockey Jerry Bailey, analyzing the race for NBC, pointed out it wasn’t just the rider who showed guts in making the winning move.

“The courage of the horse in Journalism to do this…” Bailey marveled.
