‘Trump Embraced the Media!’ CNN’s Kaitlan Collins Marvels Over ‘Accessible’ President’s Eagerness to Take Questions
CNN star Kaitlan Collins marveled over President Donald Trump’s accessibility in a recent interview.
During an appearance on Jason Tartick’s podcast, Collins said that the president is remarkably “accessible” and has “always understood the value of a camera and a microphone,” favorably comparing his willingness to take questions to contemporaries like former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden.
“Sometimes presidents are press averse; Trump embraced the media,” Collins said. “He did it for decades as like this New York mogul, and so he just had a different approach to the press, and always has.”
Collins also said that, because Trump likes to take questions from the media, events that were once considered bland are now must-attend spectacles for the press.
“Trump is such an accessible president, that like, if he’s just swearing in the ambassador to Greece, like, that typically wouldn’t be a newsworthy event if President Biden or any typical president was doing it,” she said. “But Trump’s moments — anytime the camera is around, [and] reporters are around, it could turn into a press conference.”
Collins said she now has to come to events ready with about 10 questions, rather than one or two like she did in the past, because all of Trump’s events have a good chance of turning into marathon Q-and-A sessions. She added that is atypical for a president, even ones like Obama, who were good at playing the media game.
“When you speak to reporters who covered President Obama, he almost never responded to shouted questions. It just wasn’t his thing,” Collins said.
The 33-year-old reporter, beyond hosting her nightly show, is routinely seen asking questions to Trump inside the Oval Office or peppering White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt with questions in the press briefing room.
That was the case on Monday, when she asked Trump whether he was worried his rants about James Comey “could help” the ex-FBI director following his indictment. That moment came just a few hours after she had a tense exchange with Leavitt about the president deploying the National Guard to Oregon.
