Advisor to Comey: He Couldn’t ‘Stay Silent,’ He Decided to Be Transparent

An advisor to FBI Director James Comey defended his decision on sending out that letter that shook up the entire presidential election.

Daniel Richman appeared on CNN last night and told Anderson Cooper that Comey clearly made a call that he couldn’t “stay silent,” and so he “opted for transparency.”

Cooper asked him why Comey wasn’t more specific about the nature of this potential new bombshell, given its significance this close to the election.

Richman said that Comey was trying to walk a “fine line” between speculation and articulating a position. “When he speaks,” he said, “he’s gotta be sure of what he says.”
