Bash on Cantor Interview: ‘I Tried to Get Him off His Talking Points…’

After an interview in which outgoing House Majority Leader Eric Cantor dodged some of CNN’s Chief Congressional Correspondent Dana Bash’s questions about his surprising loss to a tea party challenger and its larger implications for the GOP, Bash told CNN Political Analyst Gloria Borger that she’d done her best to get straight answers from him.

“I tried to get him off his talking points,” Bash said on Sunday’s State of the Union. “I don’t know how successful I was. But the one thing I thought was interesting: he’s definitely trying to be a good Republican soldier. He’s going to vote for David Brat, the guy that just beat him in the general election.”

“What struck me is he’s clearly thinking about a career in politics at some point in the future,” Borger said. “He did stick with those Republican talking points. He did not sound like somebody who’s the number two person in the House, who had just been buried by a political unknown. So, he sounds like he’s kind of going to plot a comeback.”
