Bernie Sanders Goes After Hillary on TPP: ‘You Can’t Not Have a Position’
Appearing on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders hit his rival Hillary Clinton‘s refusal to take a stance on the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the Obama-backed trade agreement dividing Democratic voters.
“Bernie, should [voters] judge Hillary Clinton’s record with the free trade agreements that were passed during the Clinton era like NAFTA, GAT WTO?” host Joe Scarborough asked. “And should they judge her by her silence over the last several weeks on the trade pact that is just getting through Congress now?”
“Well, look, the answer is yes,” Sanders said. “Especially in terms of the fast track process taking place now. You can be for the TPP, you can be against the TPP. But this is such an enormously important issue, that you have to have a view on it.”
“Is it surprising to you that Hillary Clinton does not have a view on one of the most important trade issues of our time?” Scarborough asked.
“Yes, it is. I think it’s surprising to the vast majority of the people,” Sanders replied.
“Look the president supports it,” he continued. “I strongly disagree with him. I think our trade policies have been a disaster, they have cost us millions of jobs, I’m against them. President is for them, the Chamber of Commerce is for them, but you can’t not have a position on an issue of such importance.”
