Boris Sanchez Literally Brings Receipt to Fact-Check House Republican’s Claim: ‘Sir, I Have That Check Here’
CNN’s Boris Sanchez anticipated a Republican congressman’s responses ahead of their discussion about President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden.
Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-WI) appeared on Wednesday’s CNN News Central, where he jousted with the host over the younger Biden’s overseas business dealings. Congressional Republicans have long alleged that Joe Biden illicitly benefitted from those ventures. Some have even claimed Joe Biden took bribes when he was vice president, but they have not furnished proof of their allegations despite investigating the Biden family for more than a year.
Tiffany has called for the elder Biden to be held “accountable” in the wake of Hunter Biden’s conviction on three gun charges in a case unrelated to his business on Tuesday.
“Congressmen, what specific charges would you like brought against the president?” Sanchez asked.
“We still have the record out there of 20 shell companies, 20 phone calls that Joe Biden made to his son, and over $20 million that flowed through those shell companies,” Tiffany replied. “We want to get all that information before the American people.”
Sanchez noted that the $20 million was $15 million that “went to Biden family associates,” but that none of the documents released by the House Oversight Committee show that Joe Biden received any money when he was in office.
“Therefore, there’s no evidence that he did anything illegal, that he abused his power, or that he abused his power in office to help his family members or friends get wealthy,” the host said.
“Well, Joe Biden has a check in the amount of $40,000 that has his name on it,” Tiffany replied. “You’ve got another $200,000 check that came from Jim and Sarah Biden to him. I mean–”
As Tiffany continued his response, Sanchez interjected and held up a copy of the check to Joe Biden.
“Sir, I have that check here. I actually have that check here,” he said. “That was a check from 2018 when he was not vice president, and it actually says that this was a reimbursal [sic]. This was a loan repayment from his brother.”
The lawmaker repeated the false claim that as vice president, Biden pressured the Ukrainian government to fire a prosecutor investigating an energy company on whose board Hunter Biden sat. In fact, the vice president lobbied the Ukrainians to fire the prosecutor for not prosecuting corruption.
“And he went and called off the prosecutor in Ukraine in regards to the Burisma investigation,” Tiffany insisted.
“Sir, that has been that has been debunked,” Sanchez said. “That prosecutor was unanimously disliked by both Republicans and Democrats. Even EU officials said that he was corrupt and they wanted him out.”
