Senate Judiciary Committee Approves Bill to Protect Special Counsel Mueller

The Senate Judiciary Committee has approved a bill that is designed to protect the special counsel investigating the Trump campaign and its ties to Russia.

The bill was written as a result of concern that President Donald Trump would fire special counsel Robert Mueller in an attempt to stymie the Russia investigation. Mueller and his team are currently interested in interviewing Trump to determine whether the president engaged in obstruction of justice.

The 14-7 vote in favor of the bill was divided mostly on party lines, with the Democrats voting yes and the Republicans voting no. Four Republicans, however, voted in favor: Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ), a prominent Trump detractor who will not run for re-election this year, Thom Tillis (R-NC), and Lindsey Graham (R-SC).

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has said there’s no chance he will bring the bill to the Senate floor for a vote.
