‘Brutally Honest’ Or ‘Brutally Ignorant’? Fox Guests Take On Rachel Jeantel’s Zimmerman Trial Testimony

On Thursday afternoon’s addition of “Kelly’s Court” on Fox, Megyn Kelly and her guests took on the highly consequential testimony of the witness in the George Zimmerman murder trial who was on the phone with Trayvon Martin moments before he died. Rachel Jeantel‘s testimony has been widely criticized for failing to live up to the “star witness” designation it was given in advance.
Former prosecutor Faith Jenkins told Kelly that when you look at Jeantel’s testimony so far, she is certainly a “flawed witness.” But, she added, “she comes across as being brutally honest” specifically because she has not been prone to “censoring” the final conversation she had with Martin on the night he was shot.
“I don’t think she came across as brutally honest,” Jonna Spilbor responded, “I think she comes across as brutally ignorant.” Noting Jeantel’s apparent change in demeanor from Wednesday to Thursday, she said, “Every time she opens her mouth her credibility gets chipped away and chipped away,” and adding, “the prosecution has lost points by putting her on the stand.”
The women argued over whether the prosecution had to call Jeantel to the stand in the first place, with Megyn Kelly saying they had no choice. “She is the best witness they have to say that Zimmerman started it.” She asked her guests if the jury will be able to convict Zimmerman based on Jeantel’s testimony that it was Zimmerman who first “scared” Martin and not the other way around.
“If the jury does that math, then they will convict George Zimmerman of second degree murder.” Spilbor answered. “If they do the math that you just laid out, then George Zimmerman is going to jail.”
