CBS’ Dickerson Grills Boehner: Why Not Just Pass immigration Reform?
On Face the Nation Sunday morning, host John Dickerson asked House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) why, if Donald Trump was such a headache and sanctuary cities such a threat, the House didn’t just pass the Senate’s comprehensive immigration reform package?
“I’ve been trying to do immigration reform for four years,” Boehner said. “The President has poisoned the well [with his executive actions]. He’s stirred up the American people such a way that almost be impossible to do immigration reform given the environment that we’re dealing with.”
Dickerson asked whether the GOP had something to do with the GOP House not taking up the Senate’s bill, perhaps to preserve the issue for the midterms.
“The majority leader at the time [Rep. Eric Cantor], lost his primary election some of our members thought it had something to do with immigration reform,” Boehner explained. “In fact, go back year from today with the flood of kids coming across the border, on the TV every night. Between the two, the window for doing immigration reform last summer dissipated.”
“Why not just send him a bill?” Dickerson asked. “Make him veto it.”
“I don’t think there’s that big of a difference in terms of how to reform our immigration laws,” Boehner said. “There’s been a lot of bipartisan work done on this for years. I want to do it.”
