CNN Interviews GOP Women on Kavanaugh Allegations: ‘What Boy Hasn’t Done This in High School?’
CNN interviewed a panel of five Republican women in Florida over the allegations against Brett Kavanaugh, and they offered a vigorous defense of the judge.
President Donald Trump‘s nominee for Supreme Court justice was accused by Christine Blasey Ford of of sexually assaulting her in 1982 at a party when the two were teenagers. Ford, who is set to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday, claims a drunken Kavanaugh pinned her down, groped her and tried to remove her clothes, before covering her mouth to muffle her. Kavanaugh has vehemently denied the allegations.
All five of the women CNN interviewed said they believe Kavanaugh’s denial.
“How can we believe the word of a woman of something that happened 36 years ago. This guy has an impeccable reputation. There is nobody that has spoken ill will about him,” Lourdes Castillo de la Peña said.
“But in the grand scheme of things, my goodness, there was no intercourse. There was maybe a touch. Really? Thirty-six years later she’s still stuck on that, had it happened?” Irina Villarino said.
“I mean, we’re talking about a 15-year-old girl, which I respect. I’m a woman. I respect. But we’re talking about a 17-year-old boy in high school with testosterone running high. Tell me, what boy hasn’t done this in high school?” Gina Sosa added.
“Why didn’t she come out sooner, if she’s telling the truth?” asked Villarino.
“You can’t judge the character of a man by something he did when he was 17,” Castillo de la Peña said.
CNN correspondent Randi Kaye then asked if the women would still support Kavanaugh’s appointment to the Supreme Court if the allegations were true.
“As long as that’s an isolated incident, yes. He was 17, he was not even an adult. And we all made mistakes when we were 17,” Castillo de la Peña replied. “If the person made a mistake and they’ve moved on and they have been a good human being, who are we to judge?”
“I’d be more than okay with him being a Supreme Court judge,” Villarino said.
