CNN Rebuts Trump’s Claims the Network’s Legal Pundits Are on His Side: ‘A Lot Of Cherry-Picking There’

Donald Trump again invoked CNN analysts to claim the criminal case against him in New York should not have been brought. The former president name-checked the network’s Laura Coates and Elie Honig – both former federal prosecutors – after his trial adjourned for the day.

Trump has pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal hush money payments to cover up extramarital affairs he had before the 2016 election. He denies the affairs.

“CNN panel just came out,” Trump declared inside the courthouse on Monday. “‘This is significant. There is no direct link to Trump in this alleged conspiracy.’ That’s from CNN.”

He went on to cite Coates and Honig to suggest they believe there is no case against him. “This case should be dropped by the judge,” Trump continued.

After Trump finished speaking, CNN’s Tom Foreman fact-checked several of the ex-president’s claims – including his remarks about the network’s pundits.

“The bottom line is, not a lot of new things here, but he keeps trying to say – even when he cites our own experts, Elie Honig, Laura Coates, and so on – a lot of cherry-picking there,” Foreman said. “He picked the parts he likes, to say, they’re basically saying there’s no case against him. We haven’t had anybody say there’s no case against him.”

Monday was a trying day for the prosecution. During cross-examination by Trump’s attorneys, Michael Cohen admitted to stealing from the Trump Organization. The revelation prompted Honig to say Cohen’s admission is “more serious of a crime than falsifying business records.”
