CNN’s Gloria Borger Predicts ‘Split’ Between GOP and Tea Party

CNN Chief Political Analyst Gloria Borger predicted a “split” within the Republican Party after reviewing the results of a recent Pew Research Center survey which showed an increasing rift between how establishment Republicans and tea party members view the GOP.

CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer began by citing the results of a recent Pew poll released October 15 which showed the public view of the tea party has grown to 49 percent unfavorable versus just 25 percent in 2010.

Borger said that what she found interesting was that 51 percent of self-identified Republicans told Pew pollsters that they viewed the tea party as a “separate movement.”

“I think this is what we’re seeing in the Republican Party, which is not just a rift, but I think we’re actually seeing a split in the Republican Party,” Borger declared. “I don’t see where there are differences that these people can really work out.”

“I think what you’re going to see now, among Republicans on the Hill, is the moderates trying to assert themselves and kind of put the tea party aside,” she continued. She said that the GOP cannot be a viable party without appealing to moderates, and moderates disapprove of the party’s conservative elements.
