Colbert Gives Paul Ryan Advice For Endorsing Trump: ‘You Want the First Time to Be Special’
The controversy surrounding House Speaker Paul Ryan‘s nondorsement of Donald Trump last week continues to send shockwaves through the heart of conservatives nationwide. While some have supported Ryan’s moderate and pragmatic approach, others have erratically called for the Speaker to step down, be defeated, or enter some sort of Thunderdome with battle axes to fight Trump for the heart of the Republican party.
Time will tell if and when Paul Ryan finally does support his party’s presumptive nominee, but that didn’t stop Stephen Colbert from giving Ryan some advice about his big “first time.”
“I understand. This is a big decision,” Colbert told his audience at the Ed Sullivan Theater. “Speaker Ryan may not be ready to support Trump right now, but some day, he hopes to and wants to.”
The comedian then turned to camera to address Ryan directly. “I just wanna say: it’s OK to take it slow. Just because all the cool people like Ben Carson are doing it doesn’t mean you have to. You want the first time you endorse Donald Trump to be special.”
The Late Show host continued, lobbying a barb aimed at New Jersey Governor and premature Trump endorser Chris Christie, who, “…rushed into endorsing and now everywhere he goes is a Walk of Shame.”
And of course, since the first time can be a harrowing and nerve-wracking experience for anybody, Colbert finished with one last piece of helpful advice. He said, “Just shut your eyes and think of Reagan.”
