David Ignatius: ‘The Real Problem Today is Vladimir Putin’s’

Arguing that Russian President Vladimir Putin is essentially a dog who caught a car in his invasion of the Crimean peninsula, Washington Post columnist David Ignatius said on CBS’ Face the Nation Sunday morning that Putin has inherited a fractured country largely resistant to his rule, perhaps rendering his seizure of the Crimea a Pyrrhic victory.

“The real problem today is Vladimir Putin’s,” Ignatius said. “Vladimir Putin has a Ukraine that is coming apart. He has invaded a small southern piece of it, where Russian interests are very strong, but in the Ukrainian capital you have demonstrators in the streets; these are demonstrators who evicted a pro-Russian regime in the Ukraine. They’re not prepared to go backwards. The choices Putin faces going forward are very, very bad.”
