Democratic Forum Helps MSNBC Beat Fox News For the First Time Since 2014

Friday night’s MSNBC Democratic Forum helped the cable news channel take the top spot (for one of the hours) for the first time since 2014.

Moderator Rachel Maddow‘s individual interviews with Democratic presidential candidates Martin O’Malley and Bernie Sanders earned MSNBC an average of 417K viewers in the coveted A25-54 demo. This ranked the network well above competitors CNN and Fox News for the demo, though the latter still took the top spot with 2.435 million total viewers during the 8-10 p.m. slot. The Democratic Forum came just short of first with 2.332 million.

However, former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton‘s appearance during the second hour bolstered the network’s numbers significantly for the 9-10 p.m. time slot, helping them beat Fox News’ 2.114 million with 2.447 million. The surge placed MSNBC ahead of Fox for the first time since 2014. It also helped the network secure its largest win over CNN since 2012.
