Donald Rumsfeld: It’s Possible The Pakistanis Didn’t Know Bin Laden Was There

Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld appeared on Face the Nation today and was asked what he made of the possibility that Pakistani authorities did not know Osama bin Laden had been hiding in their country, basically in plain sight within a massive compound dwarfing nearby homes.

It’s totally possible, Rumsfeld told host Bob Schieffer, and it’s not far-fetched to think that even gated communities in the U.S. could hold many unsavory secrets:

I think it is possible. And I don’t know whether they knew, and I think we ought to be asking the questions that you’re asking and that Senator Kerry is asking. However, if you go from the Pentagon up the Potomac River and look at those biggest estates up there with gated walls and trees and hidden from sight, we don’t know what’s going on there. And it is possible that someone like that with a support system – Al Qaeda support system – in my view, very likely could hide in plain sight.

That said, he added, it’s not as if we shouldn’t still be asking how or why the Pakistani government didn’t have bin Laden’s whereabouts on its radar.
