‘Elections Matter’: Obama Addresses Protests Against Donald Trump’s Victory

obama-3During a Thursday press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, President Obama was asked about what he would say to those who continue to protest against Donald Trump and his election victory.

As Americans across the country continue to renounce Trump’s controversial rhetoric and administrative staff picks, Obama’s critics have been calling on him recently to demand that he ask people to settle down.

While Obama said he wouldn’t advise those invested in the election to be silent, he told the room that “democracy is hard work” and people should stay involved and not take the system for granted.

“What I would advise, what I advised before the election and what I will continue to advise after the election, is that elections matter. Voting matters. Organizing matters. Being informed on the issues matter…”

After cautioning voters against false and sensationalist news, Obama also advised that people on both political sides must try harder to compromise and work with each other. He went on to suggest that getting people politically involved while refraining from demonizing their opponents was the best way to maintain a healthy democracy.
