Fox News’ Harris Faulkner: When Did James Comey Become ‘Such a Staunch Democrat?’
On Fox’s Outnumbered Overtime on Monday, host Harris Faulkner brought on two guests, Wall Street Journal‘s James Freeman and Democrat strategist and Fox contributor Doug Schoen, to discuss whether former FBI Director James Comey is showing his partisan leanings lately.
Faulkner introduced the segment first with clips of Comey speaking recently, in remarks where he insisted that Democrats must win in 2020. It’s a statement that received derision from the left as well as the right, in the former case by those blaming him for Hillary Clinton‘s loss, and in the latter blaming him for being a partisan Democrat. Faulkner focused on that second aspect.
“That was James Comey, former FBI Director, calling on Americans to vote Democrat in 2020 at an event in New York City over the weekend. This comes as Republicans are going after him for saying 245 times in the committee meeting last week that he ‘could not recall’ in response to questions during his Capitol Hill testimony,” said Faulkner. “In that closed-door hearing, which transcripts have now been released of, he did defend anti-Trump form FBI defendant Peter Strzok and Special counsel Robert Mueller.”
Turning first to Freeman, Faulkner asked, “do we know when former FBI Director, somebody who should be politically neutral we would hope, became such a staunch Democrat?”
“Good question,” said Freeman with a chuckle. “It’s especially interesting, given how certain he was, he seems to have forgotten or not wanted to answer a lot of questions, but was certain that there was no political bias at work.”
“I think that is the most unbelievable part of his testimony. That he seems to be unaware and largely uninterested in how this investigation started. Which could not be more consequential,” he said. “The idea that the federal government using its surveillance powers to investigate associates of the opposition party.”
Faulkner turned then to Schoen. “Would you say that you — that this is a man who could recognize bias if he saw it,” she asked, “or is he just a gun for hire in terms of politics?”
“Harris, I don’t know what he is,” said Schoen. “I’m a Democrat. I want the Democrats to win. But to hear the former director of the FBI start campaigning–he was somebody who, in October of 2016, was reading the polls and using them to decide to reopen the investigation that he’d closed in July of 2016–when his entire argument suggested there should have been, I think, an indictment, based on his logic alone…”
“That he is — as James said — forgetting everything but defending Strzok and Page? I think it’s time for him to basically get off the stage and maybe adopt a lower profile. He is doing us, the American people, and himself, no good deed, no favors.”
