Fox’s Bret Baier Declares ‘Republicans Are Closing’ in ‘Tighter and Tighter’ Governor’s Races

Fox News’ Bret Baier declared that Republican gubernatorial candidates Winsome Earle-Sears and Jack Ciattarelli are “closing” in Virginia and New Jersey on Tuesday.

After exchanging pleasantries with The Story anchor Martha MacCallum, Baier offered his opening thoughts on the two races.

“I tell you what, these elections, as we get close, one week out — and you and I will be doing an election special on election night — you know, it looks tighter and tighter. And it looks like in Virginia and New Jersey that the Republicans are closing,” he said.

After observing that President Donald Trump’s “focus” is on the New Jersey race, MacCallum then asked Baier for his “take” on it, and he obliged.

“Well, listen, I think Mikie Sherrill was projected to be this dominant figure, and that she was going to roll in New Jersey. There’s a couple of factors that are headwinds. One, the Democratic Party, Mamdani’s race in New York, hat has really divided the Democratic firepower, if you will,” answered Baier. “Also, Ciattarelli is campaigning differently than he did in ’21. Remember that race in ’21, we were all surprised because he was down 20 points heading into Election Day, that race finished at down 3 points. Now he’s in single digits as he’s closing, he has the backing of Donald Trump who only lost the state by six points, which is pretty amazing, and no single party has controlled the governor’s mansion for two terms in a row since 1961. So it’s just a lot of history here, and they could, you know, potentially pull the upset.”

She then followed up by asking the same question, but this time about Old Dominion.

“Yeah, so the Commonwealth is really interesting. Obviously, two female candidates. One of them will be the first female governor of Virginia. If Winsome Earle-Sears closes and wins, she’ll be the female black governor, black female governor in U.S. history,” observed Baier. “But listen, again , single digits. Abigail Spanberger has stepped in it a few times, and that attorney general race there is drawing a lot of focus. So I would watch that closely. I think the advantage, and fundraising, and support, and purple state goes to Spanberger. But again, single-digits is anybody’s ballgame.”
