Hannity and Ramos Go at It Over Immigration Reform: We’re ‘Not an Illegal Immigrant Country’
Shortly after he interviewed GOP presidential candidate Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), Fusion anchor Jorge Ramos joined Sean Hannity to discuss whether the Republican Party’s positions on immigration reform are to blame for its recent failure to secure the Hispanic vote.
Hannity said Latinos should favor the Republican Party because they share the GOP’s socially conservative values. But recent election results do not support that narrative, and Ramos said it’s likely due to the party’s public stances on immigration reform.
“Republicans, I think, they have missed a huge opportunity because when it comes to values they’re very close to the hispanic community,” Ramos said. “But Latinos, honestly, can’t see beyond immigration reform right now, because immigration reform is a pre-requisite for the Latinos to look at Republicans in a different light.”
Hannity then presented Mexican and Australian immigration laws, which are more tough on illegal immigration than those of the United States. Ramos said America is an immigrant country, and Hannity countered, “not an illegal immigrant country.”
According to Ramos, even if the Republican nominee is hispanic, immigration reform is a “pre-requisite” for winning Latino votes, and the Republican Party needs to get serious about it if they want to win in 2016.
