HBO’s Vice Previews Obama Prison Visit Special

This summer, Barack Obama became the first sitting president to visit a federal prison. Now, HBO and Vice have released the first promo for the upcoming special that will chronicle that visit and examine the larger issue of criminal justice reform.

“There was a strong political incentive, I think, to be continually tough on drugs. The thing just kept getting ratcheted up,” Obama tells Vice’s Shane Smith in the first promo for the special, set to air on HBO Sunday, September 27. “We think it’s somehow normal for black youth, or Latino youth to be going through this system in this way. It’s not normal.”
