Here’s the Footage of Trump’s Run-in With the ‘Bad Escalator’ He Seethed About in UN Speech

President Donald Trump turned an awkward arrival at the United Nations headquarters in New York City into a political jab Tuesday during his address to the General Assembly moments after the building’s escalator stopped dead just as he and First Lady Melania Trump stepped on it.

The pair posed briefly for cameras as they arrived before stepping onto the escalator that, to the bemusement of onlookers, ground immediately to a halt as they boarded.

After a moment of confusion, Melania quickly strode up the stalled steps, while Trump followed behind, leaving aides and staffers to take the stairs.

Trump later folded the moment into his opening remarks after the on-stage teleprompter also malfunctioned, telling delegates: “All I got from the United Nations was an escalator that on the way up stopped right in the middle. If the first lady wasn’t in great shape, she would have fallen, but she’s in great shape.”

He added: “These are two things I got from the United Nations, a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter. Thank you very much. And by the way, it’s working now.”

The joke drew laughter in the chamber, but Trump continued to then deliver a blistering broadside against the UN more generally, which he sees as an ineffective global order.
