Jane Fonda Slams ‘Not Good Enough’ Democrat Leaders on CNN: ‘Change the People!’
Actress and longtime activist Jane Fonda slammed current Democratic Party leaders as simply “not good enough” during an appearance on CNN promoting the relaunch of the Committee for the First Amendment.
Fonda joined CNN’s Dana Bash on Inside Politics on Wednesday afternoon, where she explained that this is the “most frightening moment” in American history for her. The liberal activist also promoted the relaunch of the Committee for the First Amendment, which was first formed in 1947 by actors fighting against the House Un-American Activities Committee and the blacklisting of artists over their political views.
Fonda explained that she relaunched the group because she feels the threats to free speech and other freedoms are more aggressive than ever.
She said:
No president has ever sent troops into the Democratic cities across the country saying full force. No president, as far as I know, has tried to control the Federal Reserve, the central bank. He is amassing power in a way that will destroy our democracy. And so we‘re going to stand up. We‘re creatives. We‘re storytellers. We can do it creatively. We can have a good time while we do it. We we want to push back and we want to make a model of what creative non-violent non-cooperation looks like. That doesn’t mean just showing up for people who are under attack like Jimmy Kimmel. A lot of us signed that ACLU statement protesting what happened to Jimmy Kimmel, but we want to be proactive and we want show what that can look like and violence will not be tolerated. We don’t want any of that, but we want we want move forward with love with unity, with solidarity.
Bash noted that Fonda has a long history of political activism, at one point even playing an audio clip of late President Richard Nixon complaining about her. Fonda infamously was photographed with North Vietnamese troops and posing with an anti-aircraft gun being used against American troops during the Vietnam War. She has expressed regret over the years for the photos.
Bash asked Fonda how she felt current Democratic leaders are doing and Fonda revealed she is less than impressed.
The actress said:
Not good enough. So along with this committee that that has been launched today — and by the way, what is so exciting is that there’s an exponential growth. People are signing up the minute they hear about it. Sally Field, Jon Hamm, and others are are are signing up. So I think we’re going to have a good group and we’re going to have fun doing it. I also have a PAC, a climate PAC that elects people all over the country because I don’t feel that our leaders are doing what they need to do. If you can’t change the people, change the people. That’s what we’re doing.
